When it comes to designing your home, it’s easy to stay in a comfort zone of neutrals. Who could blame us? Neutrals evolve easily over time with your style and leave plenty of room for you to switch up the accent pieces from season to season. Let me be clear: We stan a good neutral. Still, a scroll on Instagram these days will quickly show solid proof that pigment is making a comeback, and our favorite interior designers are giving us plenty of ideas on how to decorate with color. Below, we’re sharing seven foolproof ways that designers are adding a bit more flavor to their latest projects.

1. Ditch the white couch

While colors like pink and blue may feel like bold choices, the right shade can still offer plenty of versatility while being a lot more pet- and kid-friendly than a clean white couch. It’s no secret that we’re fans of functional decor, so when it comes to adding pieces to our home that can make a statement, add some depth, and stand the test of time, we turn to The Everygirl’s collab with Interior Define. From sectionals to sofas to accent chairs and beyond, our collection serves up plenty of fabrics and rich color options to take any room from safe and neutral to head-turning and eye-catching in no time flat.

2. Bring a colorful runner into a classic kitchen

Kitchens are one of the biggest (if not the biggest) investments you’ll make in your home, so it’s understandable if you find yourself wanting to stick with timeless design elements. For a dose of affordable (and low commitment) color and character, try bringing in a vintage kitchen runner rug that brings in a distinct personality to the space.

3. Show off color and pattern in accent pillows and blankets

The best part about bringing in color through accent pillows and blankets is that they’re relatively affordable to change, depending on your mood or time of year. In fall and winter, you might find yourself drawn more to jewel tones or moodier plums and emerald or olive shades, while spring and summer are the perfect times of year to bring in blush pinks and sage green.

4. Paint the walls a rosy hue

Of course, any color on the wall that strikes your fancy will do swimmingly, but I particularly love this rosy hue found in interior designer and photographer Carley Page’s dining room. It manages to feel warm, soft, and subtle while still making a huge impact on the overall look and feel of the space.

5. Jazz up your cabinetry

There’s really no better way to make a huge impact than painted cabinetry. It’s simple but commanding and can revamp old cabinets or add character to new ones. If you’re on the fence, consider a dynamic blue or soft green in place of something pastel or jewel-toned. I once heard a designer say that earth colors will always be considered timeless, so it’s safe to say you’ll be happy with your decision for years to come.

6. Create a gallery wall of colorful art

Bringing in colorful art to an otherwise neutral space immediately injects personality and a unique sense of style. Art is a great way to share your story: You can frame your favorite travel photos, images with your loved ones or personal creative endeavors, or invest in a work created by an artist you love.

7. Pack a punch with tile

Long gone are the days when white subway tiles reigned supreme. We still love them, of course, but with so many beautiful handmade tiles on the market, there’s no need to limit yourself. Think of tile as your bathroom or kitchen’s version of textiles and accents—it’s the perfect opportunity to bring in a dash of color and pattern.
